Grow the Right Onions
Did you know different onions grow in different areas? This is due to photoperiodism, which is the response of an organism to seasonal changes in day length.
Pin this for later…
Specifically, there are three types of onions:
short day,
indeterminate day, and
long day onions.
Whether you are growing onions from seed, or purchasing starts to grow, it is important that you purchase the right type of onion so it will have the correct day length to bulb up to size. For example, if you live in a short day zone, but plant long day onions, they aren’t going to bulb up like you want.
Short Day
Short day onion bulb up with 10-12 hours of daylight. Our favorite short day variety is Texas 1015 Supersweet. This year we’re also growing White Grex, Yellow Grex, and Sweet Red.
Intermediate Day
Intermediate day onions bulb up with 12-14 hours of daylight. The middle part of the U.S. grows intermediate day onions.
Long Day
Long day onions bulb up with 14-16 hours of daylight. The northern part of the U.S. grows long day onions.
