Our Fall Garden Strategy

We grow food year-round in Northeast Texas. We like gardening in the fall for three reasons: cooler weather, fewer pests, and the ability to grow different plants. The pace of fall gardening overall is also much more enjoyable than spring and summer gardening, too. Some of our favorite things to grow in the fall include: lettuce, broccoli, mizuna, greens, and carrots.

Here's our strategy for fall:

1) Grow another round of warm season crops like tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, squash, and potatoes - all for fall harvest;

2) Grow a round of cool season crops like sweet peas, carrots, lettuce, broccoli, and cauliflower - all for fall harvest;

3) Plant a round of cold hardy crops so they can get established like carrots, spinach, chard, kale, and various greens - for harvest throughout the fall and winter; and

4) Plant a round of crops (early enough to get established and hopefully survive through the winter with a little protection, where needed) like brussels sprouts, more broccoli, more cabbage, and more spinach - that we can harvest in the spring.
